Bamboo Maintenance
Maintaining Your Birdfy Bamboo Housing
The Birdfy bamboo housing is double carbonized and sealed to improve weather resistance. However, with long-term outdoor exposure, it’s normal for slight mildew or signs of aging to appear on the surface.
If mold appears, follow the guide below to clean and re-seal the bamboo for extended use. Even if mold doesn’t appear, it’s recommended to re-seal the bamboo every 3 to 6 months to maintain its durability and appearance.
What Type of Sealant Should I Use?
Choose a sealant that is:
- Water-based
- Exterior-grade
- Pet/bird-safe
- Low VOC
- Anti-UV
Step-by-Step Guide: Cleaning and Re-Sealing Your Bamboo Housing
What You’ll Need:
- Protective mask and gloves
- Household cleaning agents (e.g., detergent, vinegar, baking soda, or diluted bleach)
- Hard brush or wire sponge
- Water for rinsing
- Sandpaper (120–200 grit)
- Bird-safe, exterior-grade, water-based sealant
- Paintbrush
- Before starting, put on a protective mask and gloves to avoid inhaling mold spores or getting cleaning agents on your skin.
- Use household cleaners such as detergent, vinegar, baking soda, or diluted bleach, along with a hard brush to scrub away any visible mold. For stubborn spots, a wire sponge may be more effective.
- Thoroughly rinse the bamboo with clean water, then allow it to dry completely.
- Use 120–200 grit sandpaper to gently sand the bamboo. This removes remaining mold spores and any old sealant layers.
- Using a bird-friendly, exterior-grade, water-based sealant, apply one even coat and allow it to dry (drying time may vary based on the product). Once dry, apply a second coat for added protection.
- Let the bamboo dry thoroughly before placing it back outdoors.
