Wood Maintenance

Maintaining Your Birdfy Wood Housing

The housing of Birdfy Nest Cyan/Ebony is crafted from Cunninghamia lanceolata, a timber species suitable for outdoor use because of its natural resistance to mold and insects. To further improve its durability, the housing is sealed during manufacture. However, with long-term outdoor exposure, it’s normal for slight mildew or signs of aging to appear on the surface.

If mold appears, follow the guide below to clean and re-seal the wood for extended use. Even if mold doesn’t appear, it’s recommended to re-seal the wood every 3 to 6 months to maintain its durability and appearance.

What Type of Sealant Should I Use?

Choose a sealant that is:

  • Water-based
  • Exterior-grade
  • Pet/bird-safe
  • Low VOC
  • Anti-UV

Step-by-Step Guide: Cleaning and Re-Sealing Your Wood Housing

What You’ll Need:

  • Protective mask and gloves
  • Household cleaning agents (e.g., detergent, vinegar, baking soda, or diluted bleach)
  • Hard brush or wire sponge
  • Water for rinsing
  • Sandpaper (120–200 grit)
  • Bird-safe, exterior-grade, water-based sealant
  • Paintbrush
  1. Before starting, put on a protective mask and gloves to avoid inhaling mold spores or getting cleaning agents on your skin.
  2. Use household cleaners such as detergent, vinegar, baking soda, or diluted bleach, along with a hard brush to scrub away any visible mold. For stubborn spots, a wire sponge may be more effective.
  3. Thoroughly rinse the wood with clean water, then allow it to dry completely.
  4. Use 120–200 grit sandpaper to gently sand the wood. This removes remaining mold spores and any old sealant layers.
  5. Using a bird-friendly, exterior-grade, water-based sealant, apply one even coat and allow it to dry (drying time may vary based on the product). Once dry, apply a second coat for added protection.
  6. Let the wood dry thoroughly before placing it back outdoors.
